In this Lunch and Learn, Associate Professor Derek Richard will discuss ways to diversify your revenue streams and fund your projects without relying on government funding. A/Prof Richard funds his cancer and anti-aging research through multiple innovative entrepreneurial streams. For example, to fund the development of an anti-cancer drug, the researchers have teamed up with a champion coffee roaster in Byron Bay, in a fundraising venture, to develop a range of fair trade, ethically sourced coffee, tea and drinking chocolate. A/Prof Richard is an expert on DNA stability and repair pathways. Of note, he discovered the human SSB family of proteins and characterised their critical role in maintaining genetic stability. This work led to two patent applications and the commercialization of technology he developed. Since moving to Queensland in 2004 he has licensed technologies to and works as a consultant for Cancer Therapeutics. His latest research has led to the initiation of a clinical trial sponsored by Cancer Research UK. Derek is currently in the process of finding a cure for COVID-19, Cancer and an anti-aging solution.
