Why the New Year is a Great Time for a Reset

There seems to be two distinct camps when it comes new year’s resolutions.

On one side you have the ‘new year new start’ crowd kicking off the year with big changes. On the other side you have those who maintain that you don’t need a new year to make positive changes.

Of course, the latter are 100% correct. You can reset your business or personal goals on a Tuesday in September if you want. There’s no rule to say these things must occur on January 1.

But…since it is January and many of us are returning to work from a break, it’s also one of the best opportunities you’ll get to think about the next 12 months and put some practical measures in place.

So, on that note, here’s why we love the new year as a time to reset and refocus.

The Power of the Pause

In public speaking training we talk about the power of the pause, but a brief pause in life is also a powerful thing.

Whether you call it ‘getting your bearings’ or ‘getting back into the groove’, January is a great time to have a look around before the usual grind sets in.

It helps you move from a mindset of “What do I have to deal with today?” to “What do I want to achieve this year?”.

The New Year Helps Change Feel Normal

At the start of a new year lots of people are making changes. The collective reset lowers the barrier so that trying something new doesn’t feel as isolated or as strange. In fact, it’s almost expected!

By the way, if you’re going to adjust pricing, update systems, or change your service delivery model, January (new calendar year) or July (new financial year) are the best times to do it.

It’s a Clean Measuring Point

There’s no ‘line in the sand’ quite like a new calendar year. Whether you are measuring production, leads or your personal health stats, the new year gives you a meaningful point for comparison after you’ve made changes.

Intention Beats Perfection

One reason that making changes in January gets a bad rap is that people often set unrealistic goals that fall apart when the realities of life set in.

Do a little reality test with your new year goals and resolutions. Will they be realistic and sustainable through February, March etc.?

Small intentional changes compound over time and tend to stick longer than big dramatic changes.

Final Thought

Making positive changes, getting practical advice or trying new can happen at any time. But since it is a new year there’s no time like right now to get some momentum.

At Regional Business HQ we help people in business turn their resolutions into practical action.

Here’s a few ‘resolutions’ we can help with:

  • I need to stop doing marketing on the run and have a plan
  • I need to make time to understand some of the new digital tools
  • I need to work more on understanding my team and their personalities
  • I need to develop my confidence when it comes to talking about what I do
  • I need to make the step up from my home office to a dedicated space
  • I need to learn how to understand those reports the accountant sends me
  • I need to network more and get involved in the business community
  • I need to learn how to make my business idea a reality
