hen disaster strikes, whether it’s a flood, fire, or storm, primary care becomes a lifeline. But how can local providers ensure they’re ready to serve their communities when it matters most?
The Growing Primary Care Resilience program, delivered by Regional Business HQ and supported by the Resilient CARE initiative, is helping providers across Rockhampton, Livingstone, Bundaberg, and Fraser Coast do just that.
Here’s how you can act today to build resilience in your practice…
Secure Access to Power, Records, and Connectivity
Ensure your clinic has a backup power source and a plan for accessing patient records remotely. Whether through cloud-based systems or secure offline backups, continuity of care depends on access to information, even if your physical location is compromised.
Action: Audit your current systems. Can you access patient records if the internet goes down? Do you have a generator or battery backup?
Develop a Relocation Plan
If your clinic becomes unsafe or inaccessible, where will you go? Identify alternative locations in advance, such as places with power, internet, and accessibility for staff and patients.
Action: Create a relocation checklist and share it with your team. Include contact details, communication plan, equipment needs, and transport options.
Build Local Networks
Resilience isn’t just about infrastructure, it’s about relationships. The program’s workshops offer a space to connect with other providers, share ideas, and coordinate disaster response.
Action: Attend a local business resilience workshop. You’ll gain practical skills and build a support network that can be activated in times of crisis.
Integrate with Disaster Management Systems
Primary care providers play a vital role in community recovery. By aligning with local and district disaster management plans, you can ensure your services are part of the coordinated response.
Action: Know how to find your local disaster management group. Consider how your clinic can contribute to preparedness, response, and recovery efforts.
Participate in Resilience Training
The program offers free workshops and one-on-one sessions tailored to your needs. Whether you prefer group learning or individual coaching, there’s a format that works for you.
Action: Register for upcoming sessions in your region. The training is free until June 2026 for eligible providers with an active ABN.
Resilience Starts Now
Being resilient means being ready for anything. By taking these steps, primary care providers can ensure they’re not just surviving disasters, but continuing to serve their communities when they’re needed most.
