Writing professional communications training with Sandra Hogan

Effective business writing saves money, time, and reputation. Regional Business HQ is hosting WriteBusiness who offers you practical, interactive effective business writing courses designed to help your writing support your business goals.

Has someone in your business ever written an email that offended a customer? Have you ever seen a report go to the board that delayed a critical decision? Have you had proposals rejected because they weren’t concise enough, or they missed the point?

Perhaps you wish you and your staff could get on with your real jobs, instead of wasting time in an endless cycle of writing, rewriting, and editing?

This session will focus on improving the elements of writing, in the context or writing good communications, starting with emails. Sandra will cover all the skills that also apply to reports, briefs or any other kind of government or business document.

Specifically, the session will cover a general discussion about what makes a good email (and what makes a bad one) and how is it different from other kinds of correspondence? In additoion, Sandra will touch on
• plain English. It’s required, but how can we also be professional?
• paragraph construction
• sentence construction
• active and passive voice
• sentence flow
• concrete v abstract language
• conciseness
• use of technical terms, jargon and legalese.

Common grammatical difficulties and punctuation, such as:
• tenses
• subject-verb agreement
• commas
• dashes
• semi-colons
• dot points
• capital letters.
