Conversations That Matter Breakfast

Navigating Toxic Work Environments: Handling psychopaths, narcissists, and gaslighting

Featuring organisational psychologist, Dr Vicki Webster, this breakfast event will include an overview of the Dark Triad and the impact of toxic behaviours in the workplace, whether they be displayed by a manager, colleague or direct report. The session will cover what the research says about the best way to cope with toxic behaviours and strategies for having courageous conversations with difficult people. October is Safe Work Month and this event is a timely reminder that a safe workplace also includes caring for mental health.

More about this conversation…

With the release by WorkSafe Queensland of Managing the risk of psychosocial hazards at work Code of Practice 2022, leaders are not just focusing on physical safety but thinking about how they can create a psychosocially safe workplace. One psychosocial hazard that causes a lot of concern is toxic leadership and associated harmful behaviours by managers, colleagues and/or direct reports. Business owners and leaders ask themselves: how can we create a psychosocially safe place for people to speak up when they feel psychologically unsafe? What reasonable management action can I take when harmful, negative work behaviours are observed or reported? How can we better deal with toxic behaviours at the individual level, team level and organisational level (culture)?

Dr Vicki Webster will lead a Conversation that Matters on dealing with toxic behaviours at work, including how to identify the Dark Triad versus derailing leadership behaviours, how to cope when targeted by extremely negative behaviours, and how to work with dysfunctional team members. There will be the opportunity to ask questions and share your experiences.

Participants will receive a complimentary copy of Vicki’s Survival Kit for Targets of Toxic Leadership.
